Disruption breeds opportunity — and the indie sector has been living proof of that over the past year. Leadership has changed hands, ownership structures have evolved, distribution deals have been reshuffled, and the very definition of “independent” continues to expand.

Yet through all of it, the indie world isn’t just surviving — it’s setting the pace. Some of music’s biggest names, including this issue’s cover star RAYE, are flying without a major label. France’s Believe is gearing up for a high-profile push into the U.S. market. And by label ownership, independents claimed 44.15% of the U.S. recorded-music industry in Q1 2026 — nearly double the share of any single major.

The ground keeps shifting. But for indie, the footing has never felt more solid.
